Mark Beesley hails confident Matlock display

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley says Saturday’s victory over Matlock Town was the squad’s best performance of the season as they powered to a third straight win.

Goals from Stefan Mols, Jay Harris and Connor Woods ensured the Yellows ran out comprehensive 3-1 winners on home soil, rounding off a fantastic seven days which also saw victories away at Liversedge and Lancaster City. 

“They’re a really good team and will be right up there at the end of the season,” Beesley said post-match.

“No-one can argue that we didn’t thoroughly deserve the win. 

“On another day, we’d probably score one or two more. We missed a penalty, hit the post and had some good chances where we could’ve done a little bit better. 

“We limited them to two efforts in the whole game, which is good considering the firepower that they’ve got.”

On the day, Bohan Dixon returned from suspension as a second-half substitute, while captain Josh Amis and left-back Andy White were also named as part of a strong bench against the Gladiators.

And with Stefan Mols returning to the starting XI with a Man of the Match performance, Beesley was quick to emphasise the importance of squad depth.

“I don’t want 12 or 13 players that can play, and then one or two who top up the bench,” he said. “I want lads who can play, and whenever they come in will try and keep hold of the shirt.

“We might rotate at times, but it’s testament to how we’ve built this squad.

“We’ve had a good week, two difficult away games and it was nice to win back home.”

On the impact of Connor Woods, the Yellows boss added: “He’s hit the post, he’s scored three in three. It’s what you want from your striker. 

“Connor is what we’ve needed because of injuries and illness. We’ve been lacking up there, and he’s been great for us.”
