Jay Harris: Our destiny is in our own hands

Warrington Town midfielder Jay Harris says hard work and preparation are crucial if the Yellows have serious ambitions of reaching the Pitching In Northern Premier League play-offs.

Town currently sit fifth in the division, 11 points behind current league leaders Matlock Town, albeit with a game in hand.

Last weekend’s 2-0 victory over Hebburn Town in the FA Trophy third qualifying round saw the Yellows extend their unbeaten run to six matches, and Harris is keen to see their momentum grow.

Next up is a home clash with Hyde United, who have won just one of their last seven league games.

As a busy winter period approaches, midfielder Harris is keen to ensure that he and his team-mates give themselves the best possible chance of remaining near the top of the table.

“Being a ‘bigger side’ in the division doesn’t give you the right to reach the play-offs by not working hard,” he said.

“We need to work hard, train and look after ourselves.

“It doesn’t just happen on a Saturday, it’s all about the lead-up to it too. It’s how you live your life and train, and that will show on a Saturday.

“Promotion is my goal, through the play-offs or automatic. I want that.”

Some shrewd summer recruitment stands Paul Carden’s side in good shape, with former Liverpool goalkeeper Dan Atherton, talented Fowler Education Football Academy (FEFA) forward Matty Grivosti and Spanish midfielder Stefan Mols among the players arriving at Cantilever Park.

More recently, Sean Williams completed a permanent move from National League side Altrincham, having caught the eye since joining the club on loan.

Sean Williams made his move to Cantilever Park permanent earlier this month.

Harris, another summer acquisition, believes the Yellows’ squad has enough talent to maintain their push for promotion this season.

He added: “Dan Atherton is a very good lad, Robbo [Mark Roberts] is an experienced centre-half too.

“The whole team is talented. Sean Williams is an unbelievable addition to the squad.

“We’re only going to get better and better. I don’t believe we’ve hit our peak yet or hit our highest standards, so there’s definitely more to come.”
