Jack Mackreth aiming for successful bank holiday weekend

Warrington Town winger Jack Mackreth says the team is hoping to make it a positive bank holiday weekend with games against Matlock Town and Bamber Bridge respectively.

Mackreth, 29, returned to the Yellows following a stint with Bala Town in the Welsh Premier League following the curtailment of the 2020/21 Northern Premier League season, and made his first start of the season in the 0-1 win away to Stafford Rangers.

He also recently started in the 2-0 win over Atherton Collieries at Cantilever Park, bouncing back from the defeat at Scarborough.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better start,” said Mackreth, reflecting on the mid-week victory against the Colls.

“It was a disappointing result on Saturday but I thought the temp was a lot higher against Atherton. As soon as the game started we knew that we would be looking for the result.

“We were really disappointed in the performance against Scarborough. It didn’t feel like we were a threat and I think we said in the changing rooms it felt like we were defeated going into the second half. We wanted to improve on that against Atherton and as I said from the first minute we bounced back right away and it was a big result and if we can go into the bank holiday weekend and if we can pick two more wins up we couldn’t ask for a better start.”

Mackreth is a handful of players that returned to Paul Carden’s squad for the 2021/22 campaign, with the side looking to push for promotion and remaining the NPL play-off champions from the 2018/19 season after a victory against South Shields.

The Yellows face Matlock Town at home on Saturday, with a 3:00pm kick-off, before making the journey to Bamber Bridge on bank holiday Monday.

“I think we’ve kept the spine of the team together,” said Mackreth.

“Obviously Josh Amis, Luke Duffy, myself and everyone wanted to come back after covid. That’s been crucial and if we can just keep adding to it. I think we certainly need a couple of squad players to add into it and it’s important that we do keep adding and competition for places is crucial.

On the Matlock clash, he continued, “I feel like when we’re at home we have a big advantage. We perform at home as we saw against Atherton Collieries and like I said if we can get six points across the bank holiday it puts us in good stead for the league.”
