Goalkeeper Liam Isherwood on life as Warrington Town's number one

  1. Warrington Town goalkeeper Liam Isherwood says he is enjoying the challenge of regular men's first team football following a move to the Cal.Delivery Stadium over the summer.

Following the expiry of his contract at Football League side Accrington Stanley, Isherwood joined the Yellows ahead of their return to the Northern Premier League.

He has featured 19 times in all competitions since then, and more recently has kept three clean sheets in his last five league games.

While non-league football is nothing new to Isherwood - the 23-year-old having previously spent time at Clitheroe, Stalybridge and Marine - he says the challenge of Step 3 football has been an exciting one.

"I've enjoyed playing regular men's football, where you're fighting for points every single week," Isherwood said.

"Initially, we weren't getting the points that we wanted this season, but performances have improved over the last few weeks and we're getting the goals and results that we deserve.

"A few of the signings, players like Niall [Watson], have helped a lot. We've got a bigger squad and more competition for places, and that will only benefit us in the long run when players are out injured.

"We've got a good group. There are no bad lads in there, and everyone is in it to move the team forward.

"After a difficult run of results, we've pulled together and everyone is pushing in the same direction, which isn't always the case at a lot of clubs.

"Morale has grown as we've won more games, but even when we went through that difficult patch, the lads didn't turn on each other when that could've easily happened.

"To an extent, we couldn't get our shape right [earlier in the season] and the move to a back five was out of necessity more than anything else, with all the injuries we had.

"It was difficult at first to find the right style to play to the strengths of the lads. It was bound to happen with us being a totally new squad learning about each other's games on the go, but I think we've come a long way."
