Evan Gumbs: ‘Belief is massive’ as Yellows continue play-off push

Warrington Town defender Evan Gumbs says belief will be a crucial factor as the Yellows prepare to host Stafford Rangers this weekend.

With just four matches remaining in the race for the play-offs, Mark Beesley’s side face a tricky encounter against the Pitching In Northern Premier League Premier Division’s most in-form team away from home.

Rangers have picked up 34 points from 19 matches on their travels in 2021/22, and Gumbs knows Town will have a challenge on their hands if they want to regain their winning touch on home soil.

“Every game is a tricky game this season, so it’s important we prepare for what Stafford will try and do, and make sure we set up to get another three points,” he said.

“We want to put in a good performance every week, against everyone we play, so we’ll prepare right and be ready to try and win another game and get back to winning ways at home.

“The belief we have is massive, and it’s been there since the start of the season.

“We know it’s been a mad season in terms of the results we’ve had, but both the players and staff have always believed that this team can perform well and achieve something at the end of the season.”

Injuries have restricted Gumbs for large spells of the current season, but since returning from a successful loan spell at Runcorn Linnets, the 24-year-old has developed into a key figure in the heart of the Yellows defence.

The former Tranmere Rovers man has gone on to make 17 appearances for the club this season.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s game at Cantilever Park, he admits high-pressure matches are something he relishes.

“I’m enjoying every minute of my time in the starting XI,” Gumbs said. “With the talent we’ve got in the squad, anybody can start, so it’s great to know that the manager trusts me to do a job for him each game. That gives you confidence in itself.

“Clean sheets are massive for us. We know that if we defend well as a team and keep the back door shut, we’ve got the talent at the top of the pitch to score goals and win games for us.

“Playing in these types of games is what it’s all about. It’s where you want to be at the end of the season, fighting for promotion.

“The lads are under no illusions of what we need to do to make sure we’re in those play-off spots after these next four games, and we’ll make sure we do everything right going into them.”
