Carden expecting tough test at Stafford

Warrington Town are on the road for the first time in the league this season as they travel to Stafford Rangers on Tuesday night.

Buoyed by the opening day win over FC United, manager Paul Carden hopes to have a new face in the line-up in the shape of Nathan Corness, who impressed in a couple of the early pre-season games before taking an opportunity with a Football League club.

Sean Miller is a doubt through injury, while the Yellows are still waiting on international clearance for Jack Mackreth.

Stafford opened their season with a surprise 3-1 win at home to fancied Morpeth Town, and the Yellows don’t have the greatest of records at Marston Road, drawing on all three visits since Carden took over.

Carden said: “We know the big dangers from set pieces. It’s another tough one, it doesn’t change. No matter who you’re playing or when you’re playing.

“You’ve got to make more good decisions than opposition and fewer bad decisions, and if you do that you’ll probably win the game.”

Striker Jordan Buckley is likely to continue up front, after scoring a brace in an impressive performance to start the season, continuing his goalscoring form from pre-season.

The manager added: “Jordan wants to learn, he wants to get better. He will score goals and if he can get more understanding to save himself from more running, and Bees (Mark Beesley) has taken him aside to work on his game.

“I’ve told him when he’s one on one to not look for anyone else, because he’s got pace to burn, he’s big, he’s leggy, his arms go across you, he’s hard to play against, he’s got good fit.

“If it clicks for him, he can be whatever he wants to be. Which is what everyone wants.”

Dom Reid and Matt Regan got unexpected minutes on Saturday after sustaining injuries during pre-season, and Evan Gumbs continues to work his way back to fitness.
