Can Warrington win the NPL?

It has been a promising start to the new season for Warrington Town, and things only promise to get more tense for the club over the passing months as Paul Carden and his team look to secure promotion into the next division. The best way to do that is by winning the title this campaign, and the signs are promising for fans.

The club have only been in this division for the past two years, but they are already showing signs that they could be a contender for those looking to place a sports bet. They are chronic favourites to the promotion, just like Real Madrid to the Champions League or New England Patriots in the NFL SuperBowl odds.

Warrington are on course to eclipse their record set in their first campaign at this level following a promising start to the new season but building on what they have started will be the biggest ask for Carden and his support staff.

During the 2016-17 campaign, the form quickly changed and removed any potential hope of a promotion push, which was something that also cost Stuart Mellish and Lee Smith, their roles at the club. As is the crucial element with any side in this division, maintaining form is the most imperative issue that all sides will be looking to achieve. 

The momentum in the Northern Premier League is the most contentious issue, and it’s something that can alter the confidence levels depending on whether you’re on a winning run or not.

Strong Start

It has been a promising start to the new season for Warrington, and they currently sit in fourth place in the division. Their away form has certainly been an asset, as they are the only side to have not been beaten on their travels so far this season. 

They have also won four of their seven games on the road. Scoring goals has been a little troublesome at times as they have only recorded 20 goals to this point. However, defensively, they have been sound. They boast the joint-second best record in the division having conceded only 15. That record is only beaten by the side leading the division- South Shields.

The league leaders have set a frightening pace at the top of the table, and they have only conceded nine goals in 14 matches. However, they have proven to be beatable, as they have lost two games already this season. The biggest problems that Warrington have faced so far this campaign have come in front of their own fans, as they have lost three times at home. 

Town have only managed to win two of their six home matches, and this will be something that Carden will be looking to address before it gets out of hand. The home form is the backbone to a strong promotion push, and if they can replicate their away form at home, then they would have an excellent chance at pulling back the South Shields lead, which currently stands at ten points. The belief in the side would certainly highlight that it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.

Recent Form

The recent form in all competitions has remained strong, and Warrington are an extremely difficult side to beat. The only defeat in the past five matches has come against Brackley Town in the FA Cup, while they have not allowed this to affect their league form. During this run, they have drawn twice and won twice.

Both of these wins have come in their most recent outings against Whitby Town and Matlock Town; both away from home. All the signs point to exciting times ahead for Town, and if they can maintain this run of form, then there is no reason why they can’t aim for promotion this season.
