Beesley: We didn’t show what we’re about

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley admits that his side were not at their best as they were beaten 3-0 by Tamworth in the National League North at Cantilever Park.

The Yellows trailed inside 16 minutes after Ben Milnes curled home a free-kick from 25 yards out, and despite a good chance for Isaac Buckley-Ricketts, who had his effort saved at the near post, they could not find the response they needed before half time.

An early period of positive play in the second half was shattered when Tamworth utilised Tom Tonks’ long-throw capabilities at their own corner flag which eventually worked its way to Kyle Finn for their second goal, finding their third after another Tonks throw caused havoc in the Yellows’ box, allowing Jamie Jellis to tap in a rebound.

Speaking post-match, Beesley said: “We weren’t at our best today. If you’re going to take on Tamworth, you really need to be at your best.

“But sometimes you have to look at the opposition and just admit that they were better than us and they fully deserved the win.

“We didn’t show the form that we’ve shown of late – that’s the disappointing thing for us. We didn’t show our way of playing or our energy.

“I don’t think that we performed well as individuals and as a team which is something that we’ve been doing well recently. When you perform like that against the league leaders there’s only one outcome.

“We’ve got to dust ourselves down and we’ve got to be much better in our performance – if we still get beat after that then we can say that we were beaten by the better team.

“We need to be at our best in all of our games in this league. It’s a tough and unforgiving league and you can quite easily slip into defeat after defeat so it’s important that we bounce back and get ourselves ready for Saturday.”

The Yellows will get the opportunity to bounce back with two consecutive games at Cantilever Park, as they prepare to face Alfreton Town on Saturday and Southport the following weekend.

After a tough week which saw the Yellows play against Chester and South Shields prior to yesterday’s clash, Mark Beesley is hoping that the defeat doesn’t derail the progress that his side has made in recent weeks.

“You never want to lose any game but this league is unforgiving and we’re playing against really good teams.

“We can’t be too disappointed, we’ve got to learn and move on quickly because we’ve got another tough game [against Alfreton Town].

“Three-game weeks are tough for us – we’ll have to see if we can freshen things up and make some changes for Saturday because we’ve got to use everybody when it’s a three-game week.

“We are going to lose games in this league, but we’ve got to make sure that when we do lose games, we bounce back with a better performance and then the results tend to look after themselves.

“We can’t let it derail us but it does happen in this league because it’s unforgiving, you can bounce from game to game with a few losses so it’s important that we dust ourselves down and get ready for Saturday.”
