Beesley gives verdict on Peterborough Sports defeat

Warrington Town manager Mark Beesley admits Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Peterborough Sports was a game too many for his side as their six-game unbeaten run came to an abrupt end.

Hayden Cann’s close-range finish shortly after half-time proved enough for the visitors, with the Yellows unable to find an equaliser as they had done in midweek against Farsley Celtic.

Following the defeat, Beesley was left with a sense of disappointment as his side slipped to 15th in the National League North table.

“Probably the game should’ve been 0-0, but we’ve given a goal away from a set-piece, which is our achilles heel at the moment,” he said post-match.

“It was a really poor goal, then we didn’t do enough to hurt them. In the first half we had some really good chances, but we didn’t do enough to win the game and I think what has gone on during the week has caught up with us today.

“We’re really disappointed. When you go into three-game weeks and there are nine points available, you want to get six or seven points and we’ve ended up with four.

“It’s hard to criticise the players because they’ve given everything for the club. There’s a small group of them, and we looked tired today.

“In hindsight we could’ve done with making more changes, but we can’t so we just need to keep going and believing in what we’re doing.

“We have to be better than that, and we have to be better in both boxes because set-pieces are key and we’ve given six goals away in the last few games, all from set-pieces. We have to learn from it and go again.”

Attention swiftly turns to a trip to Gloucester City on Saturday (3pm kick-off) – a game brought forward after initially being scheduled for the following Tuesday.

The Yellows were 4-1 winners over Bishop’s Stortford in their last away trip and will be hoping for similar success this coming weekend.

AWAY TRAVEL: Gloucester City

“We’ve got two Saturdays before the midweek games start again, so we’ve just got to be ready,” Beesley added.

“It’s the level we’re at – we are playing against really good teams.

“Every game is really tough, and there are fine margins. We’ve come out on the wrong side this week – missing a penalty which would get us three points on Tuesday then today with poor defending – and it’s costing us.

“We’re going to get bumps in the road and this is a big one.”
