Atherton keen for response after FA Cup exit

Warrington Town goalkeeper Dan Atherton says the squad will use the disappointment of last weekend’s FA Cup exit as extra motivation heading into Saturday’s game against King’s Lynn Town.

Mark Beesley’s side bowed out of the competition as former Town midfielder Stefan Mols came off the bench to score the decisive winner for Curzon Ashton in a 3-2 victory at the UNIS Compliance Stadium.

Attention now returns to league action, and a home game against a King’s Lynn side currently two points below the Yellows in the National League North table.

For Atherton, it will be a chance to make amends for some of their recent shortcomings and seek a return to winning ways.

“We won’t sugar-coat it. As a team, we’re absolutely gutted to be out of the FA Cup – it’s a massive thing for the lads, and financially for the club as well,” he said.

“I think the boys put a really good shift in and deserved a replay as a minimum. We hit the bar, we hit the post and we created plenty of chances.

“It might bode well further down the line, as we can put 100% focus into the league and try to get points on the board and some wins under our belts.

“Anyone who knows football and watched us against Banbury United and Curzon know that it was like night and day. They were two completely different performances.

“Although the result didn’t go our way on Saturday, it was more like the team we want to be – a group of lads working as hard as they possibly can to get a result.

“In terms of our next game, I don’t think we can target any specific matches in this league. King’s Lynn have had a difficult start, but they were in the play-off picture last season.

“It might be a chance for us to get at them if they’re lacking a bit of confidence, but they’ll be trying to do the same to us.

“It’s going to be another really difficult game, and one that we won’t be taking lightly.

“We want to beat every team in this league. The goal is always the same, so we’ll have a good couple of days training and make sure we’re as prepared as possible for the challenge ahead.”
