Andy White: Derby fightback gives us platform to build from

Following Tuesday night’s six-goal thriller, Warrington Town defender Andy White hopes his side can take positives from their late fightback against Rylands.

Since joining the Yellows in July, the 29-year-old has made 12 appearances in all competitions, proving to be a key player in Mark Beesley’s side. 

On Tuesday night, over 1,500 supporters turned up to watch Town face their local rivals, and reflecting on the match, White was quick to praise the fans for their support. 

“It [Cantilever Park] was absolutely buzzing,” White said. “I thought we deserved it based on our second half performance, and obviously the crowd really got behind us which helped.

“It’s probably the loudest we’ve heard Cantilever Park, and hopefully we can have more occasions like that.”

Despite falling two goals behind, an excellent second half from the Yellows saw them rally and level the game in the dying moments, with second half goals from Stefan Mols and Luke Duffy, plus a stoppage time own-goal from James Neild, earning the hosts a point. 

“A lot of teams could have gone under at half-time, in-front of a big crowd and losing 2-0, but we came out and we showed fighting spirit,” he said. 

“We absolutely dominated the second half and could have scored a couple more.

“We got the sending off in the 90th minute and some teams could have just given up then, thinking the game’s gone, but we came back again in the last minute and got the goal – I think it was fully deserved.”

White stressed the importance of having quality on the bench following an impactful display from each of Tuesday’s second half substitutes.

“We’ve got strong players on the bench who can come on and change games and we needed that,” he added. 

“We needed an impact to increase the tempo and I thought Mitch Duggan, Isaac Buckley-Ricketts and Luke Duffy did that. 

“Testament to them – they came on and they changed the game.”

Town’s focus now switches to the FA Trophy on Saturday, with a trip to the Green Energy Sports Ground to face Hebburn Town on the horizon. 

White insists the Yellows need to build on their draw at Cantilever Park on Tuesday, in hopes of a successful cup run.

Discussing the competition, he said: “It’s obviously got a lot of history and the fans would love a good cup run just like us.

“Hopefully we can go there, put on a good performance and get through to the next round.

“It also gives a chance to people who aren’t getting enough game time in the league, as good players that are on the bench can get some match sharpness playing.”
