Report: Warrington Town 4-0 Shildon

Warrington Town secured their first victory in an FA Cup tie in four years with a 4-0 win over Shildon.

Having drawn 2-2 with Northern League side Shildon on Saturday, the two clubs needed a replay at the GXO Stadium on Tuesday to settle the tie and it ended in dominant fashion for Paul Carden's men.

They established a two-goal lead within six minutes, with Josh Doherty scoring straight from a corner before Jack Goodwin smashed home a second goal shortly afterwards.

Goodwin headed home a late third from substitute Tunde Bayode's cross before homegrown youngster Reuben Denton put the seal on a comfortable Yellows win late on with his first senior goal for the club.

Town now progress to a second qualifying round home clash with South Liverpool on Saturday, September 19.

"I thought the lads were excellent," manager Paul Carden said post-match.

"We started really well and to go two goals up within six or seven minutes was everything we’d said.

"We spoke about starting quickly and aggressively and taking the game to them, and they couldn’t live with us for 10-15 minutes. We probably should have scored another in that time.

"I felt we came off it a little bit – some of our decision-making in the middle of the pitch allowed that.

"They were trying to get a foothold in the game and I felt we encouraged that a little bit.

"We played into their work rate a little bit too much and that encouraged them – I don’t think they hurt us with it, but they had the ball which I wasn’t happy with.

"I said that at half time and then in the second half, we came out and really turned the screw I felt."
