Luke Burke becomes eighth summer signing

Warrington Town have signed experienced right-back Luke Burke ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The 28-year-old has spent the past three seasons in the Northern Premier League with Ashton United.

He came through the ranks at Wigan Athletic, making five appearances in the EFL Championship, and also played in the National League for AFC Fylde and Barrow.

Yellows manager Paul Carden said: “He’s a good age, a good leader, and will fit really well into what we’re trying to do.

"He gives us another versatile option - he’s primarily a right back but he’s played against us at centre-half, I’ve seen him play holding midfield, I’ve seen him play wing-back - so it gives us a lot of positional cover.

“He’s a proper player and when the fans see him on the pitch, they’ll hear him on the pitch because he’s very, very vocal. He’s an organiser, and that’s something you want in the team.

"He’s hungry to do well - he had a bit of a disappointing finish at Ashton with an injury, but their loss is our gain and that’s the way we’ve approached it.

“From our first meeting with him, it was going to happen and we were going to agree. We’re delighted to have him on board because he’s a really good character and a really good player.”

Burke signed ahead of the start of pre-season last weekend and becomes the eighth new signing in Carden’s squad for the new season, which kicks off on Saturday 8 August.

He said: “I spoke to Cards and he told me his ambition for the club and what they want to do this season, and to share the same aspirations is massive for me.

I liked everything he had to say. I’m glad to get it sorted and I can’t wait to get the season started. My aim at the end of the day is to come here and get promoted, and that’s how it should be.

“What you see is what you get with me. I’ll always give 100%, whether it’s in training or in a game. I train as I play. People who know me know I like a bit of a tackle. Doesn’t matter who I’m coming up against, I’ll never pull out of a tackle, I’ll never not put my head in where it hurts, I’m that type of player.

“But at the same time, I like to play football, I like to keep the ball on the ground, I like to pass the ball and play nice, attractive football when we can, and try and get forward as much as I can as well, and try and create something offensively for the team and do my part going that way.

“Promotion has to be mine and the club’s aim. I’ve come close myself a few times. Now I’m a Warrington player, I can’t wait to put on the shirt for the new season and hopefully hit the ground running because we need to bring success back to Warrington and hopefully I can play a big part in that.”
