Ollie Southern confirmed as second summer signing

Defender Ollie Southern has signed a deal to join Warrington Town for the 2024/25 season.

Southern, 22, has featured in the two pre-season wins over Nantwich Town and Rochdale and can cover any position across the back line.

Last season, he played in the National League North for Hereford, making 25 appearances, although he didn’t feature in either of the games against the Yellows.

A former Manchester United academy player, Southern won a scholarship at Crewe Alexandra, playing in the year above Yellows midfielder Matty McDonald.

His senior career has seen him play in the Europa Conference League for Welsh Premier League club Bala Town, where he also won the Welsh League Cup.

Southern, who hails from Leigh, has been with the squad since the start of pre-season training.

He said: “I’ve gelled with the team quite quickly in training and on the pitch, it’s been a pleasure playing with the boys. I like the playing style, I like playing out from the back and getting on the ball, it suits me perfectly.

“I’ll play wherever the gaffer needs me, but I do like playing right-back. As long as I’m on the pitch, I’ll give it my all.”

Yellows boss Mark Beesley said: “Ollie was someone we knew, and who we’ve done a lot of homework on.

“He played in this league last year and did reasonably well, and he’s a local lad. Once we were alerted that he was available, it was something we thought let’s get him in and have a look and bed him in and give him time.

“Pre-season is about seeing if the lads fit and suit the way we want to do things, and he’s definitely done that.

“He’s gone from strength to strength and plays in a variety of positions, which in a small squad gives us the flexibility that we need.”
