Matty McDonald eager for new season to begin

Warrington Town midfielder Matty McDonald admits he was eager to get back out on the pitch ahead of the Yellows’ second season in the National League North.

The 21-year-old missed the entirety of the first half of last season last campaign, only starting one league game – the club’s opening-day 4-0 victory at Southport.

He made a handful of substitute appearances over the Christmas period before making his full return to Mark Beesley’s first XI in a 6-0 away win over Buxton in late January.

And despite starting each of Town’s final 12 league games, McDonald still feels there’s a lot more he can bring to the side if he can continue to stay injury free.

“It was frustrating to not be as involved as I could’ve been,” the midfielder said.

“I felt I was doing okay when I came back, but I’m looking forward to a full season if I can stay fit. I haven’t stopped much in the off-season.

“When the season ends, you have a few weeks off but then you can’t wait to kick a football again. I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things.”

McDonald racked up five goals in 25 league games last season, including two in his first two starts back from injury.

He has hit the ground running in pre-season, scoring against both Nantwich Town and Rochdale.

Playing behind the striker, McDonald believes he should be adding more goals to his game and insists it is something he wants to work on ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

“I need to have more goals in my game to be more effective on the pitch,” he added.

“Obviously that comes with added game time, so I just need to get out there, stay fit and keep playing.”

Last season was McDonald’s first in the National League North, having been part of the Yellows side that achieved promotion from the Northern Premier League in 2022/23.

Asked about his favourite memories of last season, McDonald highlighted the bigger grounds and larger crowds that his side were enjoying, both home and away.

The former Everton and Crewe youngster felt he thrived in the new environment, and believes he can continue to grow and play at the highest level possible.

“We sold out Cantilever Park a few times last season and I’d expect we’ll do it again. Game’s feel like there’s more riding on it and it’s good for the players as we want to play in front of big crowds.

“In terms of away games, obviously Boston United got promoted, but going to big grounds at Scunthorpe and Chester was a good memory. It has that high-level feel that I believe I thrive in.

“I’m still young enough to go higher. I back myself to play at a higher level, and I want to do it with Warrington Town.

“If I do well and the club does well, then that bodes well for me.”
