Former Preston and Burnley midfielder joins the Yellows

Warrington Town have signed midfielder Mikey O’Neill from Burnley.

O’Neill, 20, moved to the then Premier League side in January for an undisclosed fee from Preston, where he made six appearances in the EFL Championship.

He also featured 11 times in the Football League in a loan spell with Grimsby Town, and spent the second half of last season in National League North with Southport, scoring two goals in 15 games.

The Southport-born midfielder featured as a trialist in the friendly against Bamber Bridge last weekend, and is a relative newcomer to the squad.

O’Neill said: “It’s been good, I’m enjoying it. My first impressions are I like it and look forward to being here.

“I’m an attacking player, I get forward. I like to create things, I can score goals and set up goals.

“I was there (at Southport) for three months, I played a lot of games and got used to the level and I think I did well, so hopefully I can continue that form here and help the team.

“You want good players in your position because it means there’s more competition, and when there’s competition you play better.”

O’Neill will wear the number eight shirt, and adds options to a midfield that already includes the likes of Jay Harris, Matty McDonald and Bohan Dixon.

Manager Mark Beesley added: “Mikey is someone we’ve been keeping an eye on for over 12 months.

“He’s an attacking midfield player, but he’s come in late so we need to give him some time to settle in and get used to how we play.

“He’s a good footballer who’s got goals in him.”

O’Neill will be sponsored by Talk of the Town and Samuel & Josh Kirk.
