But even a victory would have left Warrington out of reach of the play off places ahead of next Saturday’s final game of the season away at Matlock, as other results went against them.
Warrington had the first shot on target in the 4th minute when Scott Bakkor’s effort was tipped over by the Ashton keeper Luke Pilling.
But it was the visitors who took the lead after 15 minutes with a well taken free-kick by striker Matthew Chadwick which went in off the post beating the out stretched keeper Tony McMillan.
Chadwick proved to be a thorn in Warrington’s side for much of the game, hitting the side netting in the 9th minute before scoring from the free-kick.
McMillan punched away another Chadwick effort on 20 minutes.
Warrington’s best chance of the half came on 28 minutes when Dylan Vassallo fired a ball across the face of goal but no one could connect as the half petered out 0-1 at the break, although McMillan pulled off a fine diving save on the stroke of half time.
Town manager Paul Carden made a double substitution at the break to try and freshen things up as Hattersley and Duggan were replaced by Monaghan and Codling.
It had little impact initially with the final substitute Michael Bakore entering the fray in the 68th minute for Scott Bakkor.
There was little to indicate a frantic final five minutes as Warrington found some urgency which eventually paid off as the Ashton keeper left his net unguarded attempting to chase down a ball allowing Codling to place the ball on Bakore’s head to equalise in the 89th minute.
The game suddenly opened up and Ashton had a great chance to snatch victory as Chadwick set up Lee Knight who fired wide with the goal at his mercy.
Ashton looked the more likely to score again in added time but Warrington held out for a 1-1 draw to bring the curtain down on the season at The Winner Recruitment Stadium.
While there will be disappointment they didn’t make the play-offs they can be proud of their achievements during their first season at this level, with a top 10 finish still on the cards.
